The 2020 Olympia got me realizing how close we are to a change of the guard

If we just look at the absolute top tier guys, it’s safe to say that Dexter and likely Phil are retiring. They were at the top of the sport in 2008, still at the top of their sport in 2015, but now in 2020 have shown major insurmountable regressions in their physiques. That got me to realize that the other guys usually considered contenders for the title are getting old too. Shawn Rhoden, who is still banned from competing, is 45. Kai is also 45 and should be considered presumably retired alongside Shawn. Roelly is 43 with a 2009 pro debut, he’s probably on his way out soon. Cedric is also 43, he has different priorities in life, I think we’re probably gonna see one or two more AC/Arnold showings from him before he decides to reign it in. Brandon and Bonac are 38. I think they are still gonna be at the top for a little while longer, alongside Ramy who I had no idea was only 36 until yesterday. The 2021 Olympia could very well be between those guys alongside the 37 year old Flex Lewis and Hadi who is 33(!!). My point is just that so many of these guys hit their strides in the mid to early 2010s and even the late 2000s. None of the young guys have really made a name for themselves until this past weekend, where we saw Iain and Hunter battle it out for top of 2nd callout and got to see somewhat exhausted but still potentially great versions of Regan and Antoine take rear echelon. Two years ago Regan was a classic guy and Antoine wasn’t competing. We also have to consider guys that couldn’t make it over due to Covid such as the Shed, easily the #6 finisher if he did the show in my opinion. All these late 20s/early 30s guys are going to become the major players in the next 2-5 years. So in short; I think we’re right on the cusp of the changing of the guard for the very upper level of this sport; a lot of our household names won’t be there two or three Olympias from now. So far there’s no dominant champion of the 20s, like Ronnie/Jay of the 00s and Phil of the 10s. Short term I can see Ramy and Brandon battling out for a little while with improved versions of Iain & Hunter pushing Bonac & Hadi and then who knows. Maybe Hadi adds a couple pounds of muscle while maintaining conditioning and becomes six time Mr. Olympia, maybe the judges end up really liking Nick Walker, literally anything can happen and it’s a super exciting time to be a fan of bodybuilding. Last note, It’d be pretty cool if a dominant champ doesn’t emerge and the title just keeps trading hands. Haven’t seen that since the 80s (there were the same amount of winners between 1980-1984 as between 1984-2008). But on the other hand it looks like Cbum just solidified his position as 10x classic Mr. O lmao
