Shoulder isolation vs overhead press

I always did overhead presses and repped 135 which is decent for my weight (170) but my shoulders LACKED. When i say lacked I mean they were fucking puny tiny deflated the size of a tennis ball. Which always confused me because i thought strength = size. After a bodybuilder friend informed me i have to isolate all 3 heads individually to get them to grow, I started doing high volume latterell raises, front raises and rear flys along with some overhead presses. My shoulders blew up like a balloon within a couple months doubled in size. Has this been similar to your experience & what is your shoulder routine?
