Building strength (not size) for legs

I’ve recently started going to the gym on a push pull legs schedule. While I want to grow my upper body, I already have pretty big legs and ass and don’t want to get them any bigger. I want to focus on increasing strength in my legs instead. Is this just a matter of increasing weight and reducing reps per set? Will doing 6-8 reps instead of 8-12 on the leg press, leg extensions, and hamstring curls prioritize strength over size? Also when I mean strength I don’t just mean lifting heavier weights, I also want this to translate into athletic strength (jumping higher/farther and running faster). Is weight lifting still the way to go for developing athletic strength?
